Drama Teaching Unit for 6th Grade (6 Lesson Plans)

This teaching unit, through a range of key drama forms and storytelling, explores the idea of using exercise to keep fit. It uses Physical Theatre and active drama games to keep students moving and working their bodies. It is supported with a number of lively musical pieces to accompany the activities.

Each lesson plan has clearly stated objectives and learning outcomes. They are structured to include introductory warm up, development and plenary sessions. A home work task is also included.

The teaching unit contains 6 drama lesson plans.

  • Lesson 1: Physical Theatre
    Students perform the exaggerated movements and facial expressions in the exercises ‘Captain’s Coming’ and ‘Fishing for Supper’.

  • Lesson 2: Making Objects
    Create body shapes representing treasure-island objects and use them in a scene of their own devising.

  • Lesson 3: The Tribe
    Choreographed stage fighting, along with the physical warm-up exercise ‘Tribal Dance’.

  • Lesson 4: Tribal Meeting
    Improvisation, visualisation of music and devising of a tribal dance for ‘The Main Course’.

  • Lesson 5: The Escape
    Frozen pictures and mime of the escape from the fearsome ‘Sharkey Malarky’.

  • Lesson 6: The Capture
    Performing mime to music while on ‘The Chain Gang’ and hot-seating of the Naval Officer and Pirates' experience in ‘Cat and Mouse’.

Supporting Materials include

  • 5 pieces of music of different styles, including tribal, comic and dramatic rhythms.
